Church FAQ
Music Picture
The First Presbyterian Church of Rochester was founded in 1861 by Sheldon Jackson. Since then we have traveled many roads - some of these roads have been smooth, some rough, some straight, some winding, but each one has helped reveal to us the love of God working through our lives. We are claimed by God's grace, and trusting in God we press on in our calling as servants of Christ.

Do I have to be a church member to attend?
No, the call of God is to everyone and to all. There are no prior conditions

Is there a dress code?
In years past church attendance was seen as a “dress up” occasion. God is not at all concerned with your outward appearance but with your spiritual awareness. Some people choose “business” dress and some come casual. Just come!

Will I be made to feel uncomfortable?
We hope not. We hope that our members and regular worshippers will be friendly and it is our wish that if you come as a guest someone will welcome you. We won’t stick a bright red ribbon on you or a nametag, and if you do not wish to socialize we will freely let you depart in peace.

What do you do in worship?
Our order of worship has four sections:
Gathering – a musical prelude invites us to come together and begin to focus on worship. A “Call to Worship” (usually verses from the Bible) invites us in. We “Confess” our shortcomings before God and receive an “Assurance” that in Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

The Word – We read sections of the Bible chosen for each Sunday. A message is shared with the children and a sermon is given by one of the pastors.

Our Response – Having heard the good news of God in Jesus Christ we respond. We “Affirm” our faith, we share some aspect of the work of the church in ministry and mission. We observe one of the sacraments of Baptism or The Lord’s Supper. And we receive an “Offering” where we take some act of dedication, giving of our time, talent or treasure to the work of the church. Sending – After a closing hymn we are sent back into the world to share good news and take the blessings of God with us on our daily walk.

Music – Hymns and songs, ancient and modern are a major part of each service of worship. Our choirs (children through adult) offer special anthems and the congregation sings a number of hymns, prayers and responses as the service progresses.

Who can answer my other questions?
One of the pastors or a member of the music staff will be more than happy to discuss our worship with you.
